Toronto Harm Reduction Alliance (THRA) is outraged to hear that in less than 3 months, funding for the last remaining safe injection sites will cease.
Ever since the Ford Government closed the 10 safe consumption services sites in March 2025, downtown Toronto has been dealing with an increase of overdoses, deaths and overburdening of EMS and Emergency Room services. These closures will add to a worsening situation.
Not only did the CTS help reduce overdoses, but they also connected clients to other resources in the city, such as housing, treatment options and providing a community to PWUD.
Premier Doug Ford has removed the safeguards that have been in place for the city’s most vulnerable systemically; instead, he has offered to create Heart Hubs, none of which have full funding. It is extremely concerning that many of these Hubs will not be in service until 2027. All of this has taken place with strong disregard for the evidence and research that CTS save lives.
THRA is requesting that the Ford Government speak to organizations that represent PWUD, researchers and affiliated resources to better address the current crisis on the street. We demand that funding be secured for harm reduction services, culturally aware treatment centres and CTS to provide life-saving services to people in need.
