The Toronto Harm Reduction Alliance (THRA) recognizes all Treaty peoples – including those who came here as settlers – migrants, refugees willingly, as opposed to those who came here involuntarily, particularly those brought to these lands as a result of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery. We pay tribute to those ancestors of African origin and descent.
As people of African (or not) descent, we offer this land recognition in solidarity with the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island in the efforts and deliberate intentions toward decolonization.
Turtle Island was never meant to be owned but to be shared. Instead, it was often taken by force resulting in colonization, racism and discrimination.
We acknowledge the complexities where our ancestors were promised land, that was never given, by those whose it was never to give. We are deeply grateful and pledge to honour the dignity and divinity that ultimately connects us all.
